Safety and CCTV Security Systems

With the crime rate growing every day, security is becoming a major concern of both businesses and homeowners. One of the most popular trends to increase security is to use CCTV security systems.

CCTV is an abbreviation for closed circuit television. For security purposes it can be defined as a constant surveillance an area, connecting that surveillance to a recording source without publicly broadcasting the images. Its main functions are for deterrence and evidence.

More businesses are using these units today than ever before. Larger businesses will incorporate several cameras whereas, smaller businesses usually have a smaller number.

Whether your business is small or large, there are some things to keep in mind before installing. First, you want to be able to monitor your customers and employees, but you do not want to invade their privacy. Make a conscious effort to place the monitor(s) in the best locations. Some good places to install them are entrances and exits, anywhere there is customer transactions, safes, etc. If possible, you should also consider monitoring your parking lot and any alley that surrounds your business.

For homeowners, with burglary on the increase, many are installing the devices to deter crime. Usually home systems will cover outside entrances and perhaps part of the surrounding area. They can also be used on the interior of the home especially if you have frequent employees inside like babysitters, nannies, etc.

At one time about the only places that used security monitoring were airports, banks, and casinos. Now they are installed in almost any public place. In some areas they are even placed on roadways to monitor traffic and traffic violations.

In previous times, VCRs were the main source for monitoring. It was not too effective, however, because even if more than one camera was used, it would still only record one spot at any given time. The overwhelming choice for today is the DVR (Digital Video Recorder). It can record on multiple cameras at once and stores more information in a smaller space. Even these devices are being improved with things like video analytics which can be programmed for things like face recognition.

CCTV security systems can be excellent resources for homes and businesses. We all have probably read of criminals being caught because of video surveillance. They can be good for identification purposes and as a deterrent. Some burglars think twice about robbery when they know a camera is watching.
