With all of the footage of nannies abusing and neglecting children, it can be scary to hire a new babysitter into your home. By placing a nanny cam in your house, you will be able to view what happens when your gone and see if your nanny is reliable. Hiding a nanny cam takes a little bit of creativity, but can be done in a matter of minutes.
Purchase a camcorder. The best camcorder to use as a nanny cam is one that records all footage to a memory card. High-capacity memory cards hold more footage than recording to a VHS or DVD. The more recording time you have, the better.
Find a place for your camera. This should be an area that the nanny wouldn’t get in to, but also a place that can view the entire room. A few good places would be hidden in the entertainment center, in a flower pot or even under a coat on the coat rack. Remember that it will need to be near an outlet in the wall to avoid the battery running out.
Set up the “prop.” Wherever you’re going to be putting your camera will need to be large enough to hide it, yet have a hole small enough so that the nanny doesn’t see it (but still is able to capture video). For example, if you’re hiding the camera in a teddy bear, you will need to cut out the back of the bear and cut a hole in the front. Place the camera inside of the bear with the camera eye pointing out of the hole. Plug the camera in.
Run some test footage to check that the camera is working properly and capturing the entire room. If not, adjust the prop and/or the settings on the camera.
Check that your camera is in the mode to save the footage to the memory card.
Turn the camera on about 10 minutes before the nanny arrives. Allow it to record the entire time.
Play back the footage on your camera or plug the memory card into your computer to watch it. Report any abuse or neglect to the authorities.
